In a powerful reminder of how quickly life can change, 77-year-old Lincoln resident Carl was recently given a “second chance at life” after surviving a sudden cardiac arrest. While at a local establishment, Carl collapsed and stopped breathing. Fortunately, a bystander named April stepped in immediately to perform chest compressions until emergency medical technicians (EMTs) arrived.

Carl was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent triple bypass surgery. Doctors from CHI Health highlighted that April’s quick thinking is the primary reason Carl survived. Medical experts emphasize that bystander CPR doubles a person’s odds of survival, whereas every minute that passes without chest compressions increases mortality by roughly 10%. Carl, now recovering, hopes his story encourages others to get educated: “I wouldn’t be here if they had not done compression CPR. If more people are aware of how easy it is… I want them to learn this.”
Why This Matters for Our July BLS Classes
Carl’s story isn’t just a miracle; it is a clear example of the chain of survival in action. While April performed hands-only CPR, professional first responders and healthcare workers rely on advanced techniques taught in Basic Life Support (BLS) courses to sustain life during critical moments.
If you are a healthcare professional, first responder, or anyone requiring advanced life-saving skills, our upcoming July BLS Certification Classes will equip you with the hands-on training needed to act decisively in emergencies.
What you will learn in our July BLS courses:
High-Quality CPR: Master the exact compression depth and rate required to maximize blood flow to the brain, just like the compressions that saved Carl.
AED Training: Learn how to quickly deploy and operate an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to shock a lethal heart rhythm back to normal.
Team Dynamics: Understand how to seamlessly transition care between bystanders, EMTs, and hospital staff.
Choking Relief: Acquire skills to save adults, children, and infants from airway obstructions.
